Where can I find datasets(?) for the top quark pair production?

Hi,

for my bach. thesis I am calculating cross sections at the LHC condition at 13 TeV. I am calculating the cross section for top quark pairs (tt~) and the 4tops (tt~tt~) with madgraph.
The plan is to calculate them and compare the PDFs and models I use with datasets from the production of tt~ and tt~tt~.

I wrote a little python script, which gives me the differential distributions for y, p_t and the invariant mass from my simulations. Now I wanted to find experimental results of these kinematic variables, to add them to my plots. But I can´t find any. In papers, I only find the plots, without the data.

Now I was trying to use the search bar for Top Quark pair production

The problem is that I don´t really understand what I am seeing.
Does anyone know where I can find the datasets I need? I am very new to this

Thank you in advance

Christian

Hi Christian,

The best way to find this type of sample is probably to use the search categories on the left side, rather than the search bar.

Choosing “CMS”, “13 TeV”, “Top Physics” from the menus gets you to a list of simulation for top quarks. I recommend the 4th in the list:
https://opendata.cern.ch/record/19981

If you’re using madgraph generally in your other studies, this sample would also be good:

A recent workshop on analyzing data in this “MiniAOD” format was given in summer 2023. Following the lessons from that workshop might be helpful for you – the messenger channels set up for those lessons are still active for getting help.

Hi,

first of al, thank you for your answer. But I still have one question:
Is this experimental data? Because I want to compare my simulations with the experimentally available data. The links say that these are simulated. Or do I understand this wrong? Sory I am new to this haha

Best regards,

Christian

(What I am doing is comparing different PDFs to experimental data)

Hi,

Ok, it had sounded like you were looking for the top pair production samples from CMS.

The 13TeV collision data is from 2015, so try those filters in the portal webpage. Check out the “dataset scouting” lesson from the workshop I linked before and see if that helps you understand how to decide on collision datasets to use. The final state you’re using to study ttbar will influence which particular data “stream” you use.

Julie
